Del latín gothicus, gótico es un adjetivo que hace referencia a aquello perteneciente o relativo a los godos. Este era un pueblo que se encontraba tras la frontera oriental del Imperio Romano y que formaba parte del grupo que los romanos denominaban como bárbaros. Este vocablo fue acuñado por el tratadista de Florencia, Vasari, quien en una biografía sobre pintores toscanos incluyó un apartado sobre el arte de la Edad Media.
Theatre of Tragedy fue una banda que se formó en la ciudad de Stavanger , Noruega, en 1993. Es conocida por sus primeros trabajos, muy influyentes en el género del metal gótico, gracias a que perfeccionaron el contraste de voces guturales masculinas con voces soprano femeninas ocupado por primera vez por Paradise Lost en su album "Gothic", llegando a un nivel de equilibrio entre ambas. Fue pionera en el desarrollo del "Doom Gothic Metal", junto a otras bandas como Tristania, Paradise Lost , The Sins of Thy Beloved o The 3rd And The Mortal. En sus tres primeros álbums, sus letras estaban predominantemente compuestas por inglés antiguo mezclado con noruego. Sin embargo, a partir de su disco 'Aégis', la banda comenzó un cambio de sonido, con menos voces guturales y melodias más calmas. También hubo un cambio en sus letras, tornándose más hacia el inglés clásico. Su siguiente disco, "Musique" fue un cambio drástico en estilo y estética, volviéndose hacia el rock electrónico y Synthpop/EBM, estilo que se mantuvo en su siguiente disco, "Assembly". Este fue también el último disco en el cual participó la cantante Liv Kristine, quien fue despedida de la banda (y más tarde formaría Leaves' Eyes con su marido Alexander Krull, de Atrocity). El Album "Storm" y su último disco, "Forever Is The World", con la nueva cantante Nell Sigland, marca el regreso al metal gótico, pero ya sin las líricas crípticas de sus primeros trabajos y con escasas voces guturales, más en la linea de bandas como Beseech o Lacuna Coil, aunque conservando un sonido propio.
El 2 de Octubre de 2010, el grupo anunció su separación tras casi 20 años juntos.
