La existencia de una música de ambiente, desde el ya antiguo piano de restaurante, como el que toca aún Enrique Chia, hasta el más actual chill out, se debe a la necesidad, ya expresada en el Banquete de Platón, de una música que no llame mucho la atención mientras uno se concentra en otras actividades, tales como comer y beber o, sobre todo, discutir argumentativamente (como en el Banquete de Platón). Más aún cuando cantar, tararear o silbar en la mesa atentaría contra las buenas costumbres (Manual de Carreño dixit).
