La música alternativa es uno de los estilos musicales más populares a nivel internacional. El rock alternativo fue producido como una alternativa a la música a finales de los 80 y principio de los 90. La baja en popularidad del rock alternativo fue debido a la sobresaturación del mercado causado por los ejecutivos de compañías disqueras quienes solo pensaban en ganar plata.

Su nombre artístico es una combinación del nombre de la actriz Lana Turner y del automóvil Ford Del Rey. Se autodenomina como «la Nancy Sinatra gánster», sus mayores inspiraciones son Elvis Presley, Kurt Cobain , Antony and the Johnsons y Britney Spears. Posee un rango vocal contralto.
Su álbum Born to Die, fue lanzado en enero de 2012, En el Reino Unido el álbum debutó en el número uno, vendiendo 117.000 copias en su primera semana. En Estados Unidos, Born to Die vendió 77.000 copias en su semana de lanzamiento, debutando en la segunda posición del Billboard 200. Generalmente, el álbum y sus respectivos sencillos han tenido una buena recepción comercial alrededor del mundo, hasta abril de 2012 ya había vendido 2 millones de copias.
