La música alternativa es uno de los estilos musicales más populares a nivel internacional. El rock alternativo fue producido como una alternativa a la música a finales de los 80 y principio de los 90. Siendo en esta última década donde alcanza gran aceptación por parte de los amantes de la música, y esto se debió en gran medida a la colaboración de bandas punk de los años 70 y 80. La baja en popularidad del rock alternativo fue debido a la sobresaturación del mercado causado por los ejecutivos de compañías disqueras quienes solo pensaban en ganar plata.
Coldplay es una banda británica de estilo Britpop/Rock alternativo. Se formó en 1998, y es conocida por sus letras suaves e introspectivas.
Los miembros de Coldplay se conocieron en la Universidad de Londres en septiembre de 1996. Primero se juntaron Martin y Buckland, y ya para el 8 de enero de 1998, Coldplay completó su formación, al unirse Will Champion. Él sabía tocar el piano, la guitarra y el bajo, y aunque no sabía tocar la batería, aprendió rápidamente. Para ese entonces, tocaban bajo el nombre de Starfish. Tomaron el nombre Coldplay de un amigo mutuo, Tim Rice-Oxley de Keane. Tim decidió no utilizar más aquel nombre ya que era muy deprimente. Al mismo tiempo se le ofreció a Tim ser el pianista de Coldplay, pero lo rechazó porque estaba comprometido con Keane.
